Together: an Android app for couples
Partners spend evenings scrolling side by side, and small disagreements turn into fights. Together gives two people a private shared space, three topics for the evening and a calm way to talk things through.
The problem
Couple apps tend to be either quizzes or shared calendars. The hard parts are elsewhere: finding something to talk about after a long day, planning time together, and getting through a small disagreement before it grows — without either partner feeling exposed.
What was built
- Your day: each partner adds moments by voice, text or photo and decides every time whether a note stays private or is shared.
- Three evening topics a day, matched to shared interests, with a reminder at the couple’s evening time.
- Together+: an AI coach and planner that writes topics from what the couple shared, rephrases a tired note gently, suggests plans for two from a prompt like “Saturday, four hours, under $60” and recaps the week.
- Talk it through: each partner talks to the coach privately and confirms their own summary; then both agree on one small plan, saved in “Our agreements”.
- One Google Play subscription covers both partners.

The app and the backend
- Flutter app with Riverpod and go_router; an offline queue that replays each change exactly once across restarts and upgrades; invites through verified Android App Links.
- Rust backend on Axum with separate API and worker processes, PostgreSQL 17, and photo and voice media in self-hosted S3-compatible storage.
- Google Play Billing without a third-party wrapper: every purchase is verified on the server through the Android Publisher API before access is granted.
- AI only on the server: DeepSeek writes topics, plans and coaching from versioned prompts with strict JSON output; voice notes are transcribed with Whisper large-v3. Prompts are covered by evaluation sets for couples and safety.
- Push through Firebase Cloud Messaging; analytics only with consent and without content or IDs.
Privacy and safety
- Private notes and conversation turns are never shown to the partner, and coach replies that would repeat a partner’s private words are rejected and rewritten.
- Sensitive text is encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM, so backups stay encrypted too; users can export or delete everything from Settings.
- Safety tools are always free: a quick cooldown and one-tap help lines for 26 countries that never notify the partner.
The landing page
usetogether.app is hand-written HTML and CSS in 13 languages, each page generated from translation files by a script. It explains what stays private and what is shared, and links to Google Play. The footer credits My Little Indie Studio and Shelf Compass as the makers.

Evidence
From the project’s test reports and operations notes, October 2026: 69 Rust tests including 28 against PostgreSQL, 121 app tests including 32 screenshot comparisons across 13 languages, and nightly backups with a verified restore.
Status and limits
Live on Google Play in 18 countries; there is no iOS release. Eleven of the thirteen languages are machine-translated with automated checks and have not been reviewed by native speakers. Together is relationship coaching, not therapy and not an emergency service. It was released in October 2026, so no store numbers are quoted.
