About the studio

We build the tools we wished we'd had.

ShelfCompass is an independent software studio. We make a small number of Shopify apps and try to make each one genuinely good, rather than a large number that are merely fine.

The idea for ShelfCompass started with a nagging feeling that a lot of stores share: the marketing looks like it's working, but the bank balance disagrees. Campaigns report sales; they don't report what those sales cost. Somewhere between the discount code and the returns shelf, the profit quietly leaks out — and the usual dashboards never show you where.

So we build apps that start from the money, not the vanity metric. We connect to the data a store already has, do one job with it properly, and leave everything else alone. No sprawling suite, no dashboard you're expected to live inside, no emails sent on your behalf.

MarginGuard is the first. It's small on purpose: it answers one question — which of your repeat customers are actually worth a discount — and it keeps answering it as new orders come in.

Building something for a Shopify store? Let's talk.

We like hearing about the specific ways stores lose money. Sometimes it turns into the next app.
